Spiritual Mismatch
BY
LEE & LESLIE STROBEL
Lee Strobel who has written many books including: Case for Faith, Case for Christ and Case for A Creator in his search to know if Christianity was authentic. His wife had become a believer in their early years of marriage and it caused a stressful situation in their disagreements in how to handle finances and giving his wife Leslie time to grow in her faith as well as their childen’s Christian education. . It caused a lot of anger and temper rages for Lee, not understanding her faith in Christ “Spiritual Mismatch” is the book that Lee and Leslie wrote together because of their concern for marriages they call—Mismatched —which addresses the difficulties when one partner is a believer and the other is not. They have experienced this and are able to give couples godly insight into this problem. Linda, the neighbor who reached out to Leslie with the gospel and then Leslie’s impact on Lee causing him to believe and writing these many books shows how crucial it is for us all to share our faith.
Even though the book begins with a narrative telling their story, much of the book is what I would call a manual with helpful and godly advice for marriages.. It includes principles in reaching out to your partner with the gospel.and for raising children in a spiritually mismatched home and advice to single Christians to avoid the pain of a mismatch. Leslie shares how she made the most of their marriage, by enjoying life together whenever possible. Her Christlike responses to the difficulties is what Lee says influenced him the most. The truth of the resurrection was also very meaningful in his decision to trust Christ. As he saw the dramatic changes in her attitudes displaying love and kindness, it caused him to begin to believe she had an authentic faith. This spoke clearly to him that it wasn’t just a phase he thought she was going through.
This book is not only helpful for couples who are struggling with a mismatched marriage, but would be an encouragement to all believers in sharing their faith clearly and how to help other couples with these problems. For those who are looking ahead to marriage it also would be worthwhile, as one chapter is “Avoiding the Dating Traps” and the strong admonishment they give about a Christian not dating an unbeliever. Lee and Leslie survived a spiritual mismatch and this book was written to help others know there is hope.
